I don’t really make New Years Resolutions. Based on past experience with this, I find it results in me putting too much pressure on myself. Subsequently if I don’t fully achieve what I set out to do I’m not always very nice to myself. This year all I’ve said I’ll do is try and feel a little less guilty for saying no to things. Could very probably be easier said that done.

Check out my 2019 travel review

Nevertheless, looking onwards to the next 12 months I can’t help but have some sort of goals travel wise. Besides, travel, exploration and adventure is really the only thing that seems to get me excited, so why not spend a significant amount of time thinking about it?!

Bong Lai Valley, Phong Nha, Vietnam

What were my top five destinations of 2019?

My circumstances are definitely different to this time last year. I’m now a student so don’t have much income which will naturally reduce my ability to travel. However I don’t plan on staying put for the whole year, so here are a few things I aim to try and do over the next 366 days.

Pigeon House Mountain, NSW, Australia

Visit a New Continent

Up until last April I had only travel in and around Europe. In 2019 I was fortunate enough to expand my exploration to Asia and Oceania. This year I would like to branch out again and get a taste for another continent. I think the most likely option would be African, with Marrkesh in Morocco being somewhere I definitely want to check out this year. I would love to explore the Americas at some point in the future. Backpacking South America would be amazing and Peru is definitely on my bucket list. Another bucket list experience for me is definitely visiting New York at Christmas – generic I know! That leaves the only other continent – Antarctica. Whilst I feel this might be slightly harder to check off the list, where there’s a will there’s a way, and I’m sure my love for snow will somehow guide me there!

Go Wild Camping and Visit the Scottish Highlands

It is so easy to just pitch a tent anywhere in Scotland. I don’t know why I haven’t done it! I used to moan about the long drive, but since making friends in Australia I’ve realised the drive isn’t really that long after all. I’m not sure why I’ve not camped much, it’s probably the British weather! But this year I am determined to do it. I would love to explore the Scottish highlands more as I have heard about some amazing beaches there, especially in the Outer Hebradis. So I definitely think I could make some sort of combined trip.

Reach the Summit of a Mountain

Like the camping scenario, I’ve wanted to climb a mountain for ages but just never done it. I did climb Rinjani Volcano last year but I certainly didn’t get to the summit. I’ve always said I want to climb Ben Nevis, but I might start with a smaller one and test my abilities a little first!

Become Better Travelled in my Own Country

I am certainly awfully travelled in my own country. There are so many brilliant cities and national parks I haven’t given time to. Therefore this year I will endeavour to get to know my own country a bit better. I’ve somehow never been to the Lake District and Bristol has always been a city I’ve been keen to check out. So, these two might fulfil this one!

Visit 5 New Countries

Arguably this could be a bit ambitious given my current financial circumstances, however if I choose my destinations wisely I’m pretty sure I could tick a few new ones off the list. There are plenty of places in Europe I haven’t been to so flights there won’t be too expensive, and travelling around Eastern Europe – a region I am keen to explore – is definitely a much cheaper option.

Angkor Wat Temple, Siem Reap, Cambodia

If you haven’t already, don’t forget top pop over to my YouTube and give my channel a subscribe. This year I’m going to be posting videos twice a week!
