My experience of a Lake Como day trip was by taking a trip from Milan to Lecco by train. This took around 45 minutes and was free with my interrail pass. Lecco is situated in the beautiful surrounds of the Bergamo Alps and a great place to check out Lake Como in a slightly more relaxed environment.

Once you’ve made the short journey from Milan to Lecco by train you’ll want to get exploring the area. Head to Piazza XX Settembre and Piazza Zermenati to find a selection of cafes and coffee shops to get your morning caffeine fix. Lecco is home to a natural history museum containing 9 rooms, each specialising in a different branch of natural history including exotic birds, reptiles and classified minerals.
Of course you will want to spend a bit of time wandering along the lakeside. The River Adda offers routes for pedestrians and cyclists to explore Lecco and Lake Como’s beautiful landscapes and archaeological sites.
Head to the Piani D’Erna mountain resort via a short and scenic bus journey from central Lecco. Here you can take a cable car ride up to some fantastic views of Lecco and Lake Como. There are some hikes around this area which you can enjoy as well as, of course, admiring all the scenery.
The bell tower of the ‘Basilica of San Nicolo’ stands at 96m making it the second highest bell towers in Italy and one of the highest in Europe. A church has occupied this site since the 1200s however the bell tower was constructed between 1902 and 1904.
Lecco is definitely a less touristy town on the Lake Como tourist trail, but it still has attractions to offer and. A Lake Como day trip is certainly a great day trip to take from Milan, whichever town you choose to head for.
