Split, Croatia is the second largest city in the country. and lies on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea. The ruin of the Palace of Diocletian forms half of Split’s old town, which is certainly a split must see. This ancient palace was built for the Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century AD. It stands as the worlds most complete remains of a Roman Palace. Find out more about the history of the city here!

There are so many things to do and see in Split, so make the best of your time there by following my 4 day itinerary of what to do in Split Croatia.

WHAT TO DO IN SPLIT CROATIA

Day 1 in Split Croatia

Free Split Walking Tour

Learn more about the history of the city on a free split walking tour. Check out the best free Split tours here.

Bacvice City Beach

This beach is really near to the centre of Split. Beach chairs can be hired here for 100 kuna (around £12) per day.

Splitska Riva

The Splitska Riva is certainly one of the best landmarks in Croatia and the waterfront here is the best place to hang around in the evenings. There is so much going on whether that’s places to eat and drink or somewhere to watch entertainment. This bustling waterfront also boats scenic views across to the mountains in both directions.

Day Two in Split Croatia

Take a walk to Kasjuni Beach

There are lots of beaches in Split to enjoy, one of the most beautiful being Kasjuni Beach. This beautiful, pebbly beach is found within Marjan Forest. It’s around 3km out of the centre of Split so the walk there is a really picturesque 50 minutes. The beach is adorned with plenty of shady spots too. The water is so clear, warm and refreshing to swim in.

If you don’t fancy the walk you can get the bus to / from the beach which costs 11kuna (£1.30).

Evening Drinks at Charlies Bar

Found on Kruziceva 5 the bars around this area were a bit cheaper than some of the more upmarket and touristy places. Here there was a variety of different shots and cocktails available at more reasonable prices.

Day Three in Split Croatia

Hire Bikes and Explore Marjan Forest Park

I found a bike hire shop on Trumbiceva Obala and rented a bike at 80 kuna (£9.80) for 6 hours. Cycling through the park means you can get a bit further afield and really explore more. Marjan Forest is certainly a Split must see!

Bene Beach

After cycling through the forest for a while I came across Bene Beach, another of the best beaches near Split Croatia. It offers an amazing view over to the Dalmatian Islands.

Sunset at Marjan Hill

Marjan Hill is found on the peninsula of Split and is covered in a dense Mediterranean pine forest. The hill is completely surrounded by the city and the sea making for excellent panoramic views. Head up here on a clear evening for an amazing sunset over the city. This really is one of the best things to do in Split.

Dinner at Toto’s Burger Bar

After watching the sunset head to this burger joint located just along from the Splitska Riva. It isn’t the cheapest but the burgers are amazing. It’s open from 9am – 11pm and serves all sorts of burgers, burritos, salads and chips.

I really recommend getting an order of chips here as these were absolutely delicious. The service here was also amazing!

DAY FOUR

Day Trip to Hvar

You can’t go to Split without checking out the Dalmatian Islands, a significant landmark in Croatia. A return ferry to Hvar cost 180 kuna (£21.90). It took about 1 hour each way. Hvar is absolutely stunning and 100% a must see in Croatia.

It‘s worth baring in mind the Hvar (and other islands) are generally a lot more expensive. For this reason I only took a day trip there but there are plenty of backpacker friendly places you can stay!

Bonj Le Bains Beach, is a small beach area where you can swim and sunbathe. By just andering around the island you will find plenty of amazing spots to swim and relax.

Lola’s Bar is a super cute cocktail bar found down a little alleyway. Drinks are around 90 kuna (£8) each but they were unique and tasted amazing. I loved the look, feel and layout of Lola’s bar and the staff were great!
